Court passage d'une conversation entre Walter Scott et Washington Irving. Extrait de la présentation : « C’est à la fin de l’été 1817 que Washington Irving parcourt l’Écosse. Grâce à l’entremise de son ami Thomas Campbell, il séjourne à Abbostford, la propriété de Walter Scott, durant quatre jours à la fin du mois d’août. Cette rencontre a une grande importance dans la formation du jeune écrivain américain, non seulement en raison de la personnalité du plus célèbre des romanciers européens de l’époque, mais surtout parce que ce dernier lui ouvre des portes insoupçonnées sur les richesses de la littérature allemande alors en vogue en Angleterre. Irving ne l’oubliera pas et diffusera par la suite, dans son propre pays, nombre de motifs tirés des légendes et des contes fantastiques allemands. »
